Before leaving with my family for a beach vacation, I made the conscious decision to disconnect from the usual routine. That meant no voice over agents, design clients, blogging, emails, phones, voice mails, text messages, deadlines, auditions....oh the list goes on and on. I left all of it back in Nyack and instead, tuned into my family without any distractions. I can't tell you how liberating it was and at the same time, how sad it made me feel that disconnecting is something I just don't normally do.
We live in a time where technology is so accessible, that it can be very difficult to breathe into a moment and actually relish it. In this world, it's about the next deadline and the ability to be reachable at all times. It's about the demand for immediate action because you can, so then you must. Disconnecting and really connecting with your family and friends can seem almost impossible when there is so much at your fingertips. How many times have you taken out your phone to send a quick email while spending "quality" time with your kids? Or how many conversations have you had while texting at the same time? And what about having "no time" only to find yourself completely consumed with facebook? I'm pretty sure we can all relate to all of this. I know I can.
So as I stood on the beach and breathed in with my kids, I realized that for me, disconnecting is one of those noodles I must throw against the wall when I am able to create the space for it. I realized how reenergized I felt and it gave me a chance to reflect on what was truly important.
So what's important to me? A space where my kids, my family and my friends are heard and seen by me without any distractions. A place where I can breathe easily and find out something new and special about someone I love. Sure, it's not easy to disconnect. In fact, I'm back into the routine. But, a week of completely disconnecting gave me and my family time to find each other again in a whole new way.
So disconnect once in a while, I guarantee you'll breathe easier and create moments you'll never forget.
