Our latest STICK OF THE WEEK is Kim Watkins. Kim is in the NOW as owner and fitness trainer for inSHAPE Fitness, functional fitness that gets you out of the retail gym!

inSHAPE Fitness creates a world where it's cooler NOT to be a member of the gym, where you can live a healthy, active life without the use of fancy equipment and without the waste of time it takes to travel to and from an exercise facility. Kim and her inSHAPE Fitness team of in home personal trainers and other wellness experts, work with clients to devise the right programming based on logistics, abilities, goals, and schedules. inSHAPE Fitness helps guide you through the work that it takes to see results.
Tell us about your NOW (Noodle On the Wall)
My current noodle......
Boot Camps in New York start blossoming in the springtime just as the tulips and daffodils do. They are also a little like most people's first and only attempt to dust off the homemade pasta maker once a year. In addition, pappardelle is one of the easier noodles to roll out and cut. My current noodle is the creation of yummy tasting homemade pappardelle. inSHAPE's Civilized Boot Camp is unlike the military-style group class so popularized by faux-fatigues, condescending trainers, and injury-induced moves. We keep it super simple, just like homemade pasta, by creating circuits that start with an instructional set first. We teach proper controlled form, variations on ability level, and ways to combine exercises within the set to push the body in multiple planes of movement. We perform all moves in time segments so that participants can move at their own pace, and we up the ante in each set until everyone is happily begging for mercy.
Is your NOW simmering, al dente or fully cooked and why?
The Noodle is Cooked and Edible but Al Dente......
The programming (which exercises, in which patterns, and at which frequencies) is always changing, so I'd say that our Civilized Boot Camp is a little like making the pappardelle. Cooking it to al dente on purpose, eating some of it with a simple sauce and cheese because it's totally irresistable. However, the final dish is a planned masterpiece that combines the delicacy of homemade pasta with the best wholesome compliments.
What recipes can you give other Creative Moms Taking On The Creative?
In my experience, all fruits of creativity (all noodles) are comprised of the balance between the sciences and the arts. Humans tend to gravitate towards either one or the other, but if you are a science person, I would suggest looking towards the art in what you do. If you are an art person, I would suggest looking to the science.

Civilized Boot Camp
What motivated you to throw your noodle?
I took over inSHAPE, a private training company in business since 1997, about five years ago. The 2008 recession nearly killed the company. Now, with my toddler, I have to use my time more efficiently. Training and teaching clients in larger groups helps me spread the inSHAPE message of gym-free fitness. By creating the Civilized Boot Camps, which are going on right now in Central Park, it not only makes for a great group fitness program but it’s also a wonderful way to enjoy the beauty of New York City parks.

What inspires you as a Mom and as a creative person?
Unbridled health, the body's ability to maintain strength and enjoy life inspires me and helps me as a Mom more than anything. It's usually on my journeys of health: out for a run or sitting on my floor in meditation that I concoct noodle recipes.

How do you juggle Mamahood and your NOW?
I don't juggle very well. I drop many, many balls however; I pride myself on being charming enough to make amends when my dropped ball lands on someone's head.
What is your ultimate pasta dish?
Homemade angel hair – I'm not sure if homemade angel hair is really possible. Can someone really form those tiny noodles using a block of metal with a crank? Assuming so, that's the ultimate for me – I just love the texture and the way that the noodles bind together with a yummy homemade tomato sauce. A little shaved parmesan reggiano on top. Red wine. Total bliss.
