My son came home from an after school program raving about his newest obsession. No, it had nothing to do with the usual speed racers or flying helicopters. His most recent fascination was........drum roll.......wait for it............EARTHWORMS.
In fact, he came home with an entire condominium of new house guests for us to entertain. This condo, otherwise known as a plastic bottle layered with sand, dirt and dead leaves, had some very large and healthy looking earthworms settled and resting. My son also had a full check list on how to take care of them. First, we had to let his new pets stretch out a little.
Then we made sure their condo was damp with a little water in their house and let them get plenty of rest by placing their condominium in a dark corner. While they rested, my son gave me and my daughter the run down as to why earthworms were so great......especially for our new veggie garden.
Earthworms Help Our Plants Grow - They push through the earth making "roads" that loosen the soil and allow air and water to reach the roots of our plants.
Earthworms Are A Great Natural Fertilizer - As an earthworm eats, organic matter passes through its body and releases worm castings that are rich in nutrients for our plants.

After a few days, my son suggested we set the little guys free in our garden so our plants would be happy. He also realized that earthworms as pets weren't that exciting. There's not a lot of running around you can do with them and they certainly can't play fetch. But we visit them everyday in the garden:)
