As we hit Target for some baby diapers, my kids noticed a radio. It was shiny, small and perfect for "playing music for our dance parties Mom!" They needed this shiny radio. They had to have it. In fact, our dance parties would not be the same without it! Sure, it was a little dramatic, but I guess I could understand why a shiny radio would be a necessity for a good dance party. By the way, our dance parties consists of me, my husband and the two of them, so a tiny radio would be perfect. But instead of buying the radio for them, I took the opportunity to not only Take On The Creative, but also give them a chance to see how working hard pays off. So together, we decided a lemonade stand would be the way to earn the money for the shiny new radio. But not just any old lemonade stand, might I add. It was A Happy Lemonade Stand.
Now, I always knew my son had brains, but when he suggested going to Washington Square park in New York City to have our Happy Lemonade Stand, I was impressed. "We'll make more money there because there's more people," he said. Wow! A true business man.

The kids decided to charge 50 cents per glass. Who knew that so many people would add a dollar to their bucket without asking for change. Everyone was so eager to help these kids reach their goal.
After two and a half hours of hard work, we ended up meeting our goal! So naturally, we celebrated in the Washington Square Park Fountain.
The Happy Lemonade Stand definitely made all of us very HAPPY! We had a blast as a family and it was great to see the kids taking ownership of their stand and understanding how money works. It also gave them an opportunity to make choices with their hard earned money. In fact, at one point a homeless man asked my son if he could have some money for food. I wasn't sure what my son would do, but he reached into his bucket and gave him a dollar.
In the end, the kids decided against the shiny radio. Instead, they wanted to use some of their money to help someone or something in need. We did our research and found the perfect candidate.......Percy The Peacock from the Popcorn Zoo.

With the remaining funds, my son purchased a chinese yo yo and my daughter a frozen toy camera, I guess the shiny radio would have to wait until our next Happy Lemonade Stand in the city.
