“Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.” - Martha Graham
I was one of those kids who sang into my hair brush in front of the mirror. Yup. My go to songs were anything from Mariah Carey's first album and Bohemian Rapsody by Queen. I sang with so much heart that I may have swallowed a few hairs from the actual brush along the way. I had the whole attitude, sweating, finger swaying, DIVA performance DOWN! Proudly, I belted those high notes at the end of every Mariah Carey song off key. It was a total scene.
I became interested in singing on key, when I got the role of Marian The Librarian in the school musical, The Music Man. It wasn't until then that I thought...."Hey, I can actually do this into a microphone." So, as I got older and more serious about performing, I started taking singing lessons. I even joined a band with my brother and my close friends. We wrote songs, recorded albums and played actual gigs......one of them at CBGB's. I was only sixteen so my parents had to chaperone. Totally embarrassing.
Anyway, singing became my persona. My name was Elena (still is by the way) and I sang well. That's what I did and that's who I was. So, I hit the pavement running towards a singing career. But along the way, that same spark that allowed me the freedom to let go while singing into my hair brush, disappeared. What was once liberating and joyful, became mechanical and weight bearing. My love for singing quickly faded when hitting the right notes and marking the exact breaths consumed my performance. Ultimately, my passion left the building.
When it comes to our noodles, we sometimes follow the recipe too closely. We measure the water exactly, add a precise pinch of salt and turn the burner on high. But cooking our noodles perfectly doesn't always guarantee a stick. Sometimes we have to let go, add a dash of something unexpected and make room for mistakes. Because after all, we learn most from our mistakes which, ultimately, bring on some amazing noodles.
So remember, the calculated steps and buttery noodles don't go far without that secret ingredient of passion. Passion will give your noodles flavor and add the spice that lights your fire to keep you going on those late nights. But most importantly, passion gives your noodles the heart and soul to stick.
So make sure to add passion to the sauce, because without it, it's just tomatoes.
