"The most interesting thing about a postage stamp is the persistence with which it sticks to its job." - Napoleon Hill
I was playing at Rye Playland this weekend with my kids band, THE HICCUPS! My band consists of my hubby, myself, a few pots and pans, two buckets, a drum machine, the occasional egg shaker and a looper pedal that loops funny sounds we make with our mouths. All of these ingredients make what we like to call, "music."
The show started a little rocky because well, we didn't have much of an audience. The weather was iffy and since we were playing on a boardwalk with vendors, most folks were there to browse. I started sweating a few minutes into the show when I was forced to ask a random guy sitting on a bench if he had "rhythm in his pocket?" I kept my cool though and kept my spirits up. After all, we were making music and that's all that mattered.
I guess it comes with the years of performing that no matter what, always put your best foot forward and give it your all because in the end, at least it's a great performance. But I'll admit, it's hard not to let it get to you while you're up there giving so much of yourself and not receiving much in return. It can weigh you down like a ton of bricks. Especially when it's something you put your heart and soul into.
We can all relate to this feeling in one way or another. Wether it be starting a brand new business with no clients knocking down your door, pouring your heart out only to get silence in return or working your tail off as a Mom without a simple thank you. We don't always get what we put out into the world back. The boomerang sometimes just keeps going. But I guess the lesson is that as long as you keep putting it out there, eventually the boomerang does find its way home.
As the show progressed, we caught the attention of a few kids and thankfully, they ended up taking the ride with us. I think the guy on the bench was happy too:) At one point, we had the audience shaking their eggs and screaming, "I GOT MUSIC EVERYWHERE!" ......it was beautiful. Those smiling faces free of any inhibitions rocked out to the music. I have to say, it's a feeling that stays with me long after the gig is over. That is why I love playing for kids.
As I gave it my all, I was reminded that the boomerang does come back. Whether I'm playing to the random single guy on the bench, or performing at Madison Square Garden, I will bring it every time. Because eventually, persistence prevails. And those kids are so worth it.
So keep throwing those noodles because eventually, it does come back!
