“Life is a moment. So make it burn always with the hardest flame.” - Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
I can remember back in my High School days feverishly writing a story about a girl who lived down south. It was romantic and very, very long.....I had just finished seeing the complete series of Thorn Birds, so you can imagine. It started off as a simple english/history project that turned into a tiny flame in my heart. I didn't care if it was good or bad, I just knew that I liked writing, creating and imagining a world outside my own little town in New Jersey. And that's when my love affair with writing began.
There was something exciting about figuring out a character and telling his or her story. Maybe that's why at one point in my life, I enjoyed acting so much. But as time went on, I ignored my tiny flame and moved on from writing. It wasn't until I became a mom, that I picked up the old journal and started jotting down my ideas again. I was seeing the world from a whole new angle. That's when my tiny flame was ignited once again. But this time, I wouldn't let it burn out.
Writing this blog and following the women who contribute to it every week, have inspired me to take action. So, my writing love affair begins again. Last week, without any hesitation, I signed up for an online writing class that has weekly assignments and lectures. Yes. A place where I have to be accountable. Where I will be critiqued. Where I will have no choice but to take my little nugget ideas and spend time with them.
How many of us have that noodle that sparks something inside of us? That one thing that lights up our fire and yet, we do nothing about it? We conveniently forget. We put out the flame because it's too overwhelming, too hard, too exposed.
I invite you to throw that noodle this week without any hesitation. Live your moment. Ignite your flame. And let your own love affair begin.
